PORTRAITS diptych

PORTRAITS

Reality TV star hopefuls and avant garde artists, cult screen legends and contemporary icons. These are my portraits.

My approach to portraiture informs all areas of my work. When photographing people, I am intent on pushing past the superficial to reveal the true individuality of the subject. Regardless of whether it’s a 15 minute studio session, or an immersive multi-situation documentary effort, my portraits are always a unique and intimate collaboration with my subjects. […]

  • WELCOME TO OUR HOME

    Welcome To Our Home —1

Kevin’s and my apartment was featured on, Design Sponge, the popular interior design site. I shot all the pictures for the piece. I often photograph people in their homes and it was a rather interesting experience to turn the camera on ourselves. It was also really fun to work with my husband on the shoot and to identify and document what we love about our home.

SANDY AFTERMATH — BELLE HARBOR & JACOB RIIS BEACH

Super Storm Sandy Aftermath -- Belle Harbor & Jacob Riis Beach

This set of post-Sandy photographs features images from two locations in The Rockaways. The pictures of the destroyed homes were taken in the tony neighborhoods of Belle Harbor and Neponsit. These homes are located right on the beach. During the storm, the Atlantic Ocean ripped away walls and foundations exposing the normally private interiors. The […]

    SANDY AFTERMATH – BREEZY POINT

Super Storm Sandy Aftermath -- Breezy Point

These images were all taken in Breezy Point, the New York City neighborhood on the western tip of the Rockaway Peninsula. The area was completely flooded during Super Storm Sandy, and at some point in the night, a massive fire broke out. The fire burned dozens of homes to the ground and scorched the surrounding […]

    SANDY AFTERMATH — ROCKAWAY BEACH

Sandy Aftermath -- Rockaway Beach —3

I spent three days last week on the Rockaway Peninsula documenting the aftermath of Super Storm Sandy. The Rockaways were one of the hardest hit areas in New York City. Like Staten Island and lower Manhattan, they endured the colossal flooding that resulted from the storm’s tidal surge. This set of images were all taken […]

    BRIDGET EVERETT

Bridget Everett at Abrons by David Kimelman

Bridget Everett is one of my favorite performers. She inspires me to no end. I shot these pictures with her at the Abrons Art Center a couple of weeks ago. She was as generous with me, as a photography subject, as she is with her audience when she performs. She’s performing next with her band, […]

    WEIMAR NEW YORK for OBAMA

Justin Vivian Bond — 2 —€” Weimar New York for Obama —€” by David Kimelman

On September 18, Earl Dax and I produced a special presentation of Earl’s Weimar New York cabaret show to benefit Barack Obama’s reelection campaign. The event was a huge success, selling out the 330 seat jewel box theater at the Abrons Art Center and raising over $20,000 for the campaign.

    EMILIANO MAGGI

I met Emiliano Maggi when I was in Rome this past spring. He is a visual artist, a performance artist, a recording artist, and a jewelry maker. In person he is quiet and affable, one of those people who sometimes appears to be floating off the ground a little bit. His artwork and his performances, […]

    KAREN AZOULAY

Karen Azoulay is a fabulous, mixed media, visual and performance artist. She and I have been friends, neighbors, and admirers of each others work for a few years now. Karen explores and expresses the relationships between people and the natural world in her work. This is a theme I also investigate in my photography, mostly through observation and literal representations. Karen, however, approaches it from a symbolic and mythological perspective.

    SERGE SEIDLITZ

Serge Seidlitz is a brilliant London based illustrator. His complex images are intricately drawn and conceptually rich. He’s also my oldest friend. We met in Soviet Moscow when we were about 5 or 5 ½. Both of our fathers were working as journalists at the time. Serge lived with his mother in England during the school year, but he would spend summers with his dad in the U.S.S.R. Cold war Russia was pretty grim, but for us kids summertime was summertime. Serge and I never tired of exploring the city, playing games and finding trouble. We were pretty naughty, but no one ever got hurt. . . except for a few times.

THANASIS PETROYIANNIS (A MAN TO PET)

Thanasis Petroyiannis is A Man To Pet. In Thanasis’s own words, A Man To Pet is “is a Man that likes to pretend that is a sexy woman in a very funny way.” Sexiness and humor, along with twisted glamor and a fiery attitude, are indeed the mainstays of his act. And while Thanasis is quiet and shy in person, A Man To Pet is a total force of nature when he’s on stage. His performances are known for their outlandish and spastic movements, outrageous outfits, and crude prosthetics.

THE BROTHERS MUELLER FOR EAST VILLAGE BOYS

The editors of East Village Boys asked me to photograph the collaborative twin duo, The Brothers Mueller for their EVB interview. The brothers, or the twins, are Kirk and Nate Mueller. They are a Brooklyn based interactive design team. They create things like iPad apps for magazines, but they also make things like hand printed, heat sensitive wall paper. The Brothers’ aesthetic is ornate and refined in contrast to the generally raw, mechanical and masculine look of most digital art and design.

    MATHIEU MILJAVAC

Mathieu Miljavac is a Paris based taxidermy artist. I visited him recently in his home and his studio and took these pictures of his artistic process.

While Mat uses traditional taxidermy techniques to create his creatures, he avoids classical or naturalistic presentations for his animals. His approach is more expressive, creating unique forms, poses, and colors for his creations. […]

    THE BRONX ZOO

    The Bronx Zoo —15

I took these pictures at The Bronx Zoo, one of my favorite places in New York City. In addition to all the wonderful animals, I also love all the hand painted faux backgrounds in the exhibits and all the Beaux-Arts Zoochitecture of the buildings. I was there a few days before Christmas. It was cold […]

Photographed in or near Bastrop TX by David Kimelman in 2011.

I visited my brother last weekend in Austin, Texas. While I was there, we toured the aftermath of the Bastrop Wildfires.
