This set of post-Sandy photographs features images from two locations in The Rockaways. The pictures of the destroyed homes were taken in the tony neighborhoods of Belle Harbor and Neponsit. These homes are located right on the beach. During the storm, the Atlantic Ocean ripped away walls and foundations exposing the normally private interiors.
The destructive flood waters left the peninsula’s streets covered in sand and debris, and its homes full of destroyed possessions. The pictures of mountains of junk are from the parking lot at Jacob Riis Beach. The massive lot has been turned into a makeshift dump where all the debris and discarded belongings are being collected and sorted.
