• DAVID JEANNEROT RENET & Les Mauvaises Graines

David Jeannerot Renet is one of the creators of Les Mauvaises Graines (”The Bad Seeds”), a conceptual urban gardening store in Paris’s 18th arrondissement, Montmartre. The shop supplies a variety of well suited plants to Paris’s window and balcony gardeners amongs a carefully curated selection of curios and object d’art. David and his staff also design and maintain custom gardens in private homes.

    SERGE SEIDLITZ

Serge Seidlitz is a brilliant London based illustrator. His complex images are intricately drawn and conceptually rich. He’s also my oldest friend. We met in Soviet Moscow when we were about 5 or 5 ½. Both of our fathers were working as journalists at the time. Serge lived with his mother in England during the school year, but he would spend summers with his dad in the U.S.S.R. Cold war Russia was pretty grim, but for us kids summertime was summertime. Serge and I never tired of exploring the city, playing games and finding trouble. We were pretty naughty, but no one ever got hurt. . . except for a few times.

THANASIS PETROYIANNIS (A MAN TO PET)

Thanasis Petroyiannis is A Man To Pet. In Thanasis’s own words, A Man To Pet is “is a Man that likes to pretend that is a sexy woman in a very funny way.” Sexiness and humor, along with twisted glamor and a fiery attitude, are indeed the mainstays of his act. And while Thanasis is quiet and shy in person, A Man To Pet is a total force of nature when he’s on stage. His performances are known for their outlandish and spastic movements, outrageous outfits, and crude prosthetics.

THE BROTHERS MUELLER FOR EAST VILLAGE BOYS

The editors of East Village Boys asked me to photograph the collaborative twin duo, The Brothers Mueller for their EVB interview. The brothers, or the twins, are Kirk and Nate Mueller. They are a Brooklyn based interactive design team. They create things like iPad apps for magazines, but they also make things like hand printed, heat sensitive wall paper. The Brothers’ aesthetic is ornate and refined in contrast to the generally raw, mechanical and masculine look of most digital art and design.

    MATHIEU MILJAVAC

    Mathieu Miljavac —1

Mathieu Miljavac is a Paris based taxidermy artist. I visited him recently in his home and his studio and took these pictures of his artistic process.

While Mat uses traditional taxidermy techniques to create his creatures, he avoids classical or naturalistic presentations for his animals. His approach is more expressive, creating unique forms, poses, and colors for his creations. [...]

    C. FINLEY

    C. Finley is a Rome based artist. She is best known for her elaborate geometric paintings and her Wallpapered Dumpsters Project, where she covers unsightly garbage dumpsters with beautiful wallpaper of her own design. THE BRONX ZOO

    The Bronx Zoo —1

I took these pictures at The Bronx Zoo, one of my favorite places in New York City. In addition to all the wonderful animals, I also love all the hand painted faux backgrounds in the exhibits and all the Beaux-Arts Zoochitecture of the buildings. I was there a few days before Christmas. It was cold [...]

    BASTROP WILDFIRES AFTERMATH

Photographed in or near Bastrop TX by David Kimelman in 2011.

I visited my brother last weekend in Austin, Texas. While I was there, we toured the aftermath of the Bastrop Wildfires. The fires ravaged a huge area southeast of the capital this past September. Our guide, Josh, is a volunteer with a local search and rescue unit and had first hand experience with the disaster. [...]

    REALITY WANTED

From The series, Reality Wanted, photographed by David Kimelman in 2010 / 2011.

Reality Wanted is a series of portraits of individuals who hope to be cast on a reality television show. I became interested in fame and people who seek fame when I worked for a number of years as an art director at Star Magazine. During that time, I found myself particularly drawn towards those who were looking to become famous through the medium of reality T.V. Though some of the people I photographed for this series have particular skills and talents that warrant our attention, such as singing, cooking, or design, the main commodity being offered by my subjects is simply themselves. Many of the people I photographed just want to have a television show made about their lives.

    BROAD CHANNEL

From Broad Channel, photographed by David Kimelman in 2009/10, in Queens, NY.

Broad Channel is my first-time collaboration with filmmaker Sarah J. Christman. Friends since childhood, Sarah and I share a fascination with altered landscapes and an expressive documentary approach. Broad Channel is a multi-channel project exhibiting our year-long exploration of a narrow strip of public shoreline in Jamaica Bay, Queens. My photographs and Sarah’s films and soundscapes closely witness the unceasing waves of visitors, the cycling seasons and tides, and the flight patterns of airplanes and migratory birds surrounding the unusual urban island of Broad Channel.

    BARNABY WHITFIELD FOR DIRTY MAGAZINE

Paul Bruno asked me to shoot the artist Barnaby Whitfield for his third issue of Dirty Magazine. Since Barnaby is a bit of a style icon around town, we thought it would be fun to give his shoot a fashion treatment rather than shooting straightforward portraits. Stylist and friend, Shandi Alexander helped make that idea a reality.

    24 HOURS OF HURRICANE EARL

From The series \"Hurricane Earl\" photographed by David Kimelman in St. Martin in 2010.

My boyfriend and I were vacationing in St. Martin’s when Hurricane Earl, a category 3 storm, hit the island. It was rather terrifying at first, but once we realized that the roof wasn’t going to blow off, we were able to appreciate the amazing power of the storm. Fortunately, the island didn’t sustain very [...]

I recently spent a few days exploring the magical Santa Elena Cloud Forest in Costa Rica. Despite having a broken toe, I absolutely had to drag some lights into the forest to take these pictures of the remarkable flora. Just look at the place.

I set up a temporary portrait studio at the BLVCK AMERICA’S ‘BLVCK IS THE NEW BLACK’ Chinatown loft party last week. Party goers had a variety of outfit enhancers to choose from to make their precious moments shine. Special thanks to Luisa Opalesky for her mad styling assistance.
